Plants and Butterflies...Spring Teachings

Its been a good week for school, so far. The kids are loving our Plants and Butterfly unit this week...

Having fun learning the different stages of the Changing Caterpillar!
A blogging friend suggested (Hi Jaime) that we might buy one of those butterfly cage kits...I will be looking for one!  We do love the Butterfly Garden at the Bronx Zoo so we will be visiting there this month again.

More work from the Garden Pack from Preschool Corner (see sidebar for the button)!

Learning about the seed and what parts a seed has..

Experiment today!

1 cup of popcorn (unpopped)

Pour into a glass, fill almost to the top....then pour water over the top of that until it covers the popcorn

Set inside a dish and let it go....we were suppose to hear sounds after about 5-6 hours but the only result was that the water was all gone..hmm..

We will doing Egg Carton Crafts all month!  Great book...

Molly picked out the purple monster and Zachary the Yellow Snail....

Molly in her Spring drawing mode!

For music this week we are learning a cute song...to the tune "London Bridge is Falling Down."

It's A Rainbow

Red and orange and yellow too
Don't forget green and blue
Add some violet, then you're through
It's a Rainbow!

I've studied plants and butterflies with my children before and enjoyed it a lot! It looks like ya'll are having fun and experiments seem to never work for me! I would highly recommend buying the caterpillar with cage. We bought ours from Insect Lore two different times and it is easy and so fun to see the caterpillars turn into butterflies and then release them. Living critters usually don't last long in our home because I don't stay on top of feeding them, but the caterpillars/butterfly cage was a success and they stayed alive!

National Chocolate Chip Day

May 15, 2012 is National Chocolate Chip Day Today is National Chocolate Chip Day! Chocolate chips are an essential ingredient in dozens of delicious baked goods—chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip pancakes, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate chip bagels, and many more. You can even find chili recipes that call for these sweet morsels! In the 1930s, Ruth Graves Wakefield created the original chocolate chip cookie at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth intended to bake chocolate cookies for her guests, but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She substituted with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate morsels and discovered that the pieces did not melt into the dough as she expected. Her cookies were an instant hit. Today, 25% of all the cookies baked in the United States are chocolate chip! To celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day, pick up a bag of chocolate chips at the supermarket and bake something yummy to share with friends and cowor
