An Apple a day..

One of the outings I LOVE the most about Fall time in NY is Apple Picking!  This year we are going at the end of the month but that is not stopping us from learning all we can about these great source of fiber pectin!

The Science of apple growing is called Pomology.

Another fun fact about apples (and there are many) - they are a member of the Rose family!  Who knew!

Some great resources for apple teachings are here for the "picking"....LOL

Apple Unit Study links over at the Homeschool Classroom (all grade levels will learn!)

Entire FALL Preschool pack over at 3 Dinosaurs - including some great Apple worksheets!

I know it's still warm where some of you all live - but here in NY Fall is in the air...apples are waiting to get picked!   Here are a few pictures from last year's apple picking fun!

We always pick with the same family and last year brought my oldest son and his fiance.

Have you ever been apple picking?  Do you have any recipes to share with apple in them?  I would love to make a few new things this year!

Until tomorrow - Be Blessed!

Wow! Your blog is so inspiring! =)
As for Apple recipes, I have one here for you! =)

Slow cooker Apple Butter:
4 qts. finely chopped tart apples
2 3/4 Cups sugar
2 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/8 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
1- Pour apples into slow cooker.
2- drizzle lemon juice over apples.
3- Combine remaining ingredients. Sprinkle over apples.
4- Cover. Cook on High 3 hours, stirring well with a large spoon every hour.
Reduce heat to Low and cook 10-12 hours, until butter becomes thick and dark in color. Stir occasionally with a strong wire whisk or mash and stir with potato masher for smooth butter.
5- Freeze or pour into sterilized jars and seal.
Makes truly delicious apple butter. The recipe reads that this will make 6-10 pints apple butter, however, I found that it made about 4 1/2 pints.
Attitude of gratitude:
~I'm grateful to be working on my food storage .... still.

National Chocolate Chip Day

May 15, 2012 is National Chocolate Chip Day Today is National Chocolate Chip Day! Chocolate chips are an essential ingredient in dozens of delicious baked goods—chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip pancakes, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate chip bagels, and many more. You can even find chili recipes that call for these sweet morsels! In the 1930s, Ruth Graves Wakefield created the original chocolate chip cookie at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth intended to bake chocolate cookies for her guests, but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She substituted with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate morsels and discovered that the pieces did not melt into the dough as she expected. Her cookies were an instant hit. Today, 25% of all the cookies baked in the United States are chocolate chip! To celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day, pick up a bag of chocolate chips at the supermarket and bake something yummy to share with friends and cowor
