Travel Tip Tuesday - Chicago - Home is Where the Heart Is {guest post}

I am so happy to introduce you to Kendra Thornton today. She is my guest here at The Joys of Home Educating.

I am a travel advocate, TV spokesperson, PR businesswoman, proud wife and mama of 3. I am a long time travel expert who has been packing my bags and traveling the world since I was 3 months old! However, no matter where I have been, I've found my utmost desire in life is right here in my own home. Today, I have taken my excitement for travel and brought it to you with some of my favorite travel tips and tricks for enjoying my home city of Chicago. Enjoy!

As you all know from reading this blog, we are travelers. We love a fun educational trip and love to share all the details with you all!  Today Kendra is bringing you the best spots to visit in her town - Chicago!

Home is Where the Heart Is

Chicago makes for an incredible place to visit and an even greater place to live. Between the theater, shopping districts, and unique eateries, there is never a dull moment in The Windy City for a location that truly feels like one of the most artistic and creative places in the world. Being a mother of 3, family friendly places are number one on my priority list, and there is no shortage of these in Chicago either.

1. Michigan Avenue Bridge

This is one of my favorites to visit in the downtown area that allows Michigan Avenue to continue across as a bridge on the beautiful Chicago River. Ferries can be seen underneath, giving tours of the city as well. There is also the Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum in the Southwest bridge tower of this structure! Once at the top of the Bridgehouse, you can view the city in a whole new perspective!

2. Broadway

There are few things quite as extraordinary as being able to experience live theater right in the heart of Chicago. Since 2000, a traveling theater show, BIC, also known as Broadway in Chicago, has worked to perform classic shows that include "Jersey Boys," "Wicked," "Monty Python's Spamalot," "The Producers," "West Side Story," "Dirty Dancing," and "Mary Poppins" for hits that have continued to stay popular for over a decade.

Watching a live Broadway performance makes for a great night out on the town for an experience that truly depicts the culture of Chicago. I find it is often a great way to enjoy an evening by getting dressed up and heading to dinner before seeing a performance that stars award-winning actors and incredible backdrops on stage.

3. Enjoying the City

Where you stay will likely determine just how much of the city you're able to experience due to the hotel's location and amenities. As residents in Chicago, we enjoy visiting a number of hotels when meeting up for lunch or wanting a weekend getaway in the downtown area.

The site gogobot is great for researching the most popular hotels in Chicago where you can read reviews and get a better perspective on what type of hotel to book based on other guests' experiences. The site is personable and user-friendly for a fun way to increase the anticipation of an upcoming getaway in Chicago.

4. Glenn's Diner

Glenn's Diner is a staple for both tourists and residents in Chicago, and is known for serving some of the most delicious food in the city. This diner offers a unique variety that includes over 25 different cereals, 16 types of fresh fish, and seafood specials that are often a steal. The food goes past the traditional deep-dish pizza found in most restaurants in Chicago and serves breakfast for every meal throughout the day (with other options as well)!

Chicago may be seen as a bustling city that is similar to New York City or even Boston, but it's truly one-of-a-kind with the unique characteristics in its culture and hometown feel that is still present in such a busy environment. Between the delicious fares to entertainment available, it's impossible to get bored in such an exceptional city.

National Chocolate Chip Day

May 15, 2012 is National Chocolate Chip Day Today is National Chocolate Chip Day! Chocolate chips are an essential ingredient in dozens of delicious baked goods—chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip pancakes, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate chip bagels, and many more. You can even find chili recipes that call for these sweet morsels! In the 1930s, Ruth Graves Wakefield created the original chocolate chip cookie at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth intended to bake chocolate cookies for her guests, but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She substituted with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate morsels and discovered that the pieces did not melt into the dough as she expected. Her cookies were an instant hit. Today, 25% of all the cookies baked in the United States are chocolate chip! To celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day, pick up a bag of chocolate chips at the supermarket and bake something yummy to share with friends and cowor...
