A Review

Silverdale Press is thrilled to announce our brand new homeschool unit studies: White House Holidays. Designed for students in grades K-12, these unit studies will enrich your students’ learning about the history of our national holidays. They will inject fun and meaningful experiences into your homeschool routine and help your family make memories.

I had the pleasure of meeting the creators of Silverdale Press at a blogging conference this fall.   One of the things that appealed to me was their unit studies. I love unit studies because it's all there for you. Any websites, links and extras are included with this unit study.

I am using this one for my 3rd and 5th grader. Some of the material is a little over their heads, but most of it is spot on  I am learning right along with them and find it fascinating that so much planning goes into Christmas White House traditions.

The girls were very interested in the "themes" of each White House Christmas season so we did some additional website research and married it up with the unit study.

As a home educating parent, what impresses me is all the details and time and effort that went into making this unit study. There are 78 pages, including pictures and recipes!  You can print as much or as little as you want to.

We are only 1/2 way thru the first section and the girls are loving it.

I would recommend this unit study for grades 3rd to 9th. Even though older grades would get something out of it also, I feel it's grade appropriate for these grades.

Did you know that the White House has an official ornament each year? I didn't...but do now!

I was given this unity study in exchange for my honest review of the product. This post may contain affiliate or sponsor links. You can see our full disclosure policy at the bottom of this blog page.

National Chocolate Chip Day

May 15, 2012 is National Chocolate Chip Day Today is National Chocolate Chip Day! Chocolate chips are an essential ingredient in dozens of delicious baked goods—chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip pancakes, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate chip bagels, and many more. You can even find chili recipes that call for these sweet morsels! In the 1930s, Ruth Graves Wakefield created the original chocolate chip cookie at her Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth intended to bake chocolate cookies for her guests, but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. She substituted with chopped up semi-sweet chocolate morsels and discovered that the pieces did not melt into the dough as she expected. Her cookies were an instant hit. Today, 25% of all the cookies baked in the United States are chocolate chip! To celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day, pick up a bag of chocolate chips at the supermarket and bake something yummy to share with friends and cowor
